Cinder series – The Lunar Chronicles

December 3, 2011 Leave a comment

I’m really grateful to have been cast in a web series that is based off of the new Cinder series, also known as the Lunar Chronicles.  I play Prince Kai, the heir to the Empire of New Beijing…Here’s a description from…

“Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.”

We shoot on December 7th, and I’ll try to post any video that finally pops up in the upcoming months.  For now, I’m just very grateful to be working, and incredibly grateful for all the support my friends and family have been giving me.  See you around!

This doesn’t need much description, but when I found out that June heard Johnny singing those words and came down the stairs and started to cry, it really hit me.  The cameras decided to keep rolling, and after the first take, the crew asked her if she could hold her place for a close up.

I really think Trent Reznor’s song is soulful in its own way, but this video has so much more to show of a man’s life.  The suicidal aspect morphs into one of regret on memories long past.  It’s so powerful hearing Cash sing it.  I’m still thinking of June though:  She really heard his heart speak through his song and just came to him… Amazing couple, amazing song, amazing life and love.  (more exciting updates on Saturday!)

Teachers, Writing, End of Class

November 20, 2011 Leave a comment

Well everyone, it’s been great, hard work, but I completed a good run with the Terry Schreiber studio in Vocal Production, taught by the lovely Page Clements.  If you haven’t taken her class, she is FANTASTIC. It’s not so much the mechanics of her teachings that struck me, but the mindset, and ultimately, the awareness of my performance, and my surroundings.  I had this pinched nerve in the lower left region of my back, and this class helped tremendously in awakening those nerves again, stretching them until they were past “numb” or “slightly uncomfortable”, to “alive, and healing.”

Next up? Retraining with Marci Phillips, and Bob Krakower.

It’s been long enough, but it’s time to enter the workshop phase of the acting life again.  It’s good to have a refresh.  Besides, there aren’t any JOBS in Decemeber.  Really, it’s a GHOST TOWN, so bring out the Cranium and Scrabble boards, because the only words that are going to come out of your mouth are the ones you write and spell yourself.

I love the effort I’ve put into my work recently.  I feel like I did about 2 and half years ago when I was so focused on just my work and nothing else.

I’ve realized how serious I want to be about this, and question why I was so anxious and silly when I first entered the city.  I attribute it to several factors: having a manager and teachers that encouraged me to be more humorously outgoing (nonstop), the promotional work and world I was getting involved in (getting paid to act crazy), and combatting against my own anxieties of living in this behemoth of a city (try to stay happy, Mike, try to stay happy…!)

I was the male model version of the following picture:

Now, frankly, I no longer give a damn about all of this.  Had a talk with someone and we spoke about our goals before we’d hit 30.  The big thing that came out was “To stop caring about what other people think about you.  To not give a shit anymore.”  I think that WAS in my mind when I started out, but as I gathered more and more connections, I started to feel I had more to lose.  The biggest thing I would have to lose is *myself* if I bowed to everyone else’s wishes.

I’m done being a “monkey”, for lack of a better term.  I’m kindof done with promotional work too.  I think it just isn’t satisfying to act like an *ASS* out in the open and attract attention, especially when my eyebrows and lips are falling off in the frigid bitch-ass cold.  It’s honestly time to get serious again.  I feel better when I’m like this.  I feel like I *respect* myself.

That’s the way it should be. #amirite?

New Costume Idea for next year’s CON!

November 17, 2011 Leave a comment

I was scouring through Netflix to find my next thing to watch and came across an idea for my next anime costume, which will probably be used around February when I might be attending Katsucon in my home state of Maryland/Virginia/DC (yeah, I spread it out when I call it, don’t I?).

It’s so obvious I need to get blue contacts.  So. Friggin. Obvy.  For ages, I’ve always loved the male leads of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.  They were *always* my type of gentlemen.

Ok, I need to rephrase this…

I think I could totally play the real-life version of pretty much every Hayao Miyazaki male lead character.  Except Porco Rosso.  Just…no.  Maybe when I have a raspy voice at 50 I’ll go “Pig-Faced Pilot” on everyone else at a convention, but for now, my choices are definitely (starting with the blue contacts choice)

Howl from “Howl’s Moving Castle” (first 3 pics)

Lupin from “Castle of Cagliostro”

Haku from “Spirited Away”

Ashitaka from “Princess Mononoke”

If I go a little “younger” (good lord, how far, right?) I’ll definitely have to try

Sasuke from “Ponyo”! =^_^=

Michael is really excited to be working with Page Clements till the beginning of December in the Terry Schreiber Studio in Vocal Production.  He’s been meeting incredible actors these past weeks, and is very grateful to continue training this winter, working with Marci Phillips (ABC Primetime Casting) on On-Camera technique before year’s end.  Next up? Bob Krakower in December as well (hopefully!)

Shiny Toy Guns, and other rock bands worthy

November 13, 2011 Leave a comment

If you are looking to brush up on your guitar, and stray away from the technical intricacy needed for fingerpicking, or just prefer to have fun jamming (smell that teen spirit?), then it behooves you to ask that friend you can’t imagine without a guitar strapped to his/her shoulders, much like imagining yourself without boot leg sand-washed JEANS on a roadtrip.

I may not paint the MOST accurate picture, but it’s a picture nonetheless.  #dealwithit

So I asked my roommate Jake to recommend a couple of good bands to start with.  We definitely riffed off each other with names that instantly came to mind.  We finished the conversation with realizations that I did not, in fact, have much of a library from these bands.

Most of my music, I admit, is dance-centric.  There are vocal standards, and rock bands intermingling in my “Playlist party” on iTunes, but everything pales in comparison to the other dance overflow I have loading up my drive!

My talk with Jake (roommate)

Me: Incubus?

Jake: Yes.

Me: Nickelback, probably, I’d say that’s an easy one to start with…

Jake: Yeah, and OH MY god, include Green Day.

Me: You really want to be in that band, don’t you. (lol)

Jake: Exactly.  Such good music.

Me: Totally.

Jake: I’d say add “Oasis” as well.

Me: “Goo Goo Dolls”?

Jake: They’ve got strange tuning to their songs. Not a great pick.  Hmmm..

Me: REM? Switchfoot? (thinking Chris Daughtry as well, but didn’t say the name)

Jake: Yeah, more like that, alot of chords.  Keep it easy to see the song in sections, so you can play the whole way through in one day.

(END amazing roommate convo)

Any other mentions that should be included?

So, as I was doing this, I realized that there needed to be more involvement/listening with guitar centric music if I wanted to get more involved with the instrument anyway.  That’s always been the problem.  I buy a guitar, and I turn around and get Maroon 5 remixes.

NOT smart.

I’d need to surround myself with music that doesn’t only use the guitar, but centers on the music that comes from the instrument.

The aforementioned bands are totally on my hit-list now.  I can’t wait to get started.

Last but not least, does anyone out there love the website “SongMeanings”?  I think I found my new love.  It’s not only a fun way to read other people’s interpretations of great music, but to come to my own conclusion about a work as well.  I LOVE knowing the lyrics to music, and have always wanted to be a great at karaoke. I hate turning the song-list book, page by page, into one long hour of dread and anxiety among my friends, followed by 5 minutes of an ambitious, but lacking performance.  With supportive, but obligatory applause.  Drunk applause.

It’s like finding something to do with Matzah in my life.  You know it’s gonna come out mediocre not matter what you do, so why prolong debate?

Just make your cracker pizza and move on with your life.  L’CHAYIM.

Lastly, I want to leave you with an incredible piece from SHINY TOY GUNS about mortality and what life holds before we pass into the next life.

I’m totally excited to listen to thought provoking pieces.  Pieces of passion, love, relationship, heartbreak, and everything else that inspire someone to go out and look for the same feeling out in the world.  Dancing is one thing. I think I’ve danced alot.  And now, I dance well.  <=Cocky.

But it’s also time to think.  To meditate.  To embark on a journey of expanding the emotional core, and I really have always wanted to do that through a great playlist.

Till next we meet? 😉

One day at a time

November 6, 2011 Leave a comment

Life goals.  Plans without a plan.  Why can’t we dream with more detail?  What happens on day 1? Do you ever hear or plan on hearing your “fired shot” so the race can begin?

Bang. There you are.

You fire it yourself the moment you wake up, and then… it’s another section of the race to complete.  Where you end that day (or in some marathons, WHEN) will be factored into how you start your following day (1 hour 52 minutes behind LEADER, as the Tour De France puts it, oui oui?).

Here are some plans I want to complete, and I think it’s perfectly fine to put them up online for everyone to see.  You know what’s good about that?  You can all hold me accountable.

Kick me in the butt if I don’t get these done.  Booty’s on ME.

Some are a little bit of stretch, but at least I can say today I fired my shot.  I wrote them down, and you cheered me on.

Complete “Plastic Heart” rewrites

Book a Commercial AND a guest spot on TV/movie

Travel Down to see some family for Thanksgiving (after that, it’ll be all work for the Holidays)

Start up a Johns Hopkins Theatre group on Facebook, just to see how everyone’s doing

Revise my personal and photo website to look more sleek

Order post cards for my company and make a new design!

Be able to play 1 song on the guitar very well, and continue to practice!

With that, I know I’ll work at all of my goals, and I’ll take one day at time.  I’ll give to the now, and not worry.  I’ll never say never.
